How much does it cost to own a small plane in Canada per year?

It varies widely, but most owners of simple piston singles spend several thousand to well over ten thousand dollars a year before they fly a single hour — hangar or tie-down, insurance, and the mandatory annual inspection are due whether the plane flies or not. Fuel, oil and engine reserves then add a per-hour cost on top.

What is an engine reserve?

Money you set aside for every hour flown toward the engine's eventual overhaul. If an overhaul costs, say, $40,000 and the engine has 1,600 hours of life left, a $25/hour reserve means the money is waiting when the overhaul comes due — instead of being a five-figure surprise.

Is it cheaper to rent or own an aircraft?

Below roughly 75–100 hours a year, renting is usually cheaper because an owner's fixed costs spread across few hours. Above that, ownership starts to win — and co-ownership or partnerships shift the math dramatically by splitting the fixed costs.
